How does back flow occur?
In order for water supply to work, there has to be a certain amount of pressure that will enable the water to effectively flow, both in and out, around the system. The water should constantly remain at a high pressure. The reduction of water pressure allows the contamination of the water from the soil or even sewage backup into supply lines. This happens when there is a high demand in water systems or if the pipes freeze or burst. In certain properties, heavy rainfall can easily cause backflow. Either way, you will probably want to prevent water backflow as soon as you can, as it is potentially dangerous and unpleasant.
Backflow prevention
Backflow can be prevented using several solutions. One of the most common ones is using an air gap. This is where an open space is created between the plumbing system and the faucet to prevent any contamination risks. Another method would be the installation of any type of backflow prevention devices like a valve that would prevent water from flowing back in to the house or basement.
